Efficient large-scale power generation from geothermal and other low-grade heat sources may now be viable, thanks to a revolutionary new technology. A team led by Behdad Moghtaderi, professor at the University of Newcastle Centre for Energy, worked with Granite Power Ltd (GPL) to develop the technology platform called Granex. It delivers higher efficiencies than conventional power plants and increases the quantum of power that can be generated from low-grade natural heat and industrial waste sources. A 100 kilowatt pilot plant set up at the varsity will enable a comprehensive power generation programme over a wide range of operating conditions. 'The one kilowatt model was a great success and demonstrated a 40 percent improvement in terms of thermal energy efficiency and power generation,' Moghtaderi said. 'It demonstrated for the first time an effective and economically viable technology platform for power generation from low-grade heat sources. From opposite ends of the globe, President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder firmly rejected criticism Wednesday of the planned New York trial of the professed Sept. 11 mastermind and predicted Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would be exposed as a murderous coward, convicted and executed. "Failure is not an option," Holder declared. The president, in a series of TV interviews during his trip to Asia, said those offended by the legal rights accorded Mohammed by virtue of his facing a civilian trial rather than a military tribunal won't find it "offensive at all when he's convicted and when the death penalty is applied to him." Obama, who is a lawyer, quickly added that he did not mean to suggest he was prejudging the outcome of Mohammed's trial. "I'm not going to be in that courtroom," he said. New Delhi: Jessica Lal murder convict Manu Sharma, who was reportedly involved in a brawl at a night club during parole, has surrendered to the police and returned to Tihar Jail, two weeks before his parole expires. Manu had been granted a 30-day parole starting from September 22 on humanitarian grounds in view of his mother's illness. The parole was later extended by another thirty days to November 22. But last weekend, Manu was reportedly seen partying at actor Arjun Rampal's club, LAP. "I was very close to Jessica Lal and I don't want the guy who murdered her in my club," Rampal said to NDTV. Manu Sharma's parole was granted on grounds that his mother Shakti Rani Sharma was keeping unwell and that his business was suffering. But Sharma's mother was seen at a media briefing on Saturday at the family-run hotel in Chandigarh, the Piccadilly Hotel. Rani is the general secretary of the Chandigarh Women's Cricket Association. TEHRAN, Iran – Iran accused three detained Americans of spying Monday, signaling Tehran intends to put them on trial. It drew a sharp U.S. response that the charges are baseless because the hikers strayed across the border from Iraq. The announcement comes as Washington and Tehran are deadlocked in negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, raising concern that the three could be used as bargaining chips in the talks or to seek the return of Iranians they say are missing. Relatives and the U.S government say the three were innocent tourists on an adventure hike in northern Iraq and accidentally crossed into Iran where they were arrested on July 31. Commenting on the case, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the U.S. of jailing innocent Iranians and pointed to two of his countrymen — a nuclear scientist and a top defense official — who disappeared in recent years. Tehran accuses the U.S. of kidnapping them. The U.S. has refused comment on the two, and there has been speculation they defected to the West.
